The family man Edmund de Waal inherits a small, intricately carved Japanese figurine: a hare with amber eyes. This seemingly inconspicuous object becomes the starting point for an adventurous, stirring and deeply moving journey through 150 years of family and world history. Together with Edmund, the audience embarks on a journey into the past, from Odessa via Paris to Vienna: his ancestors’ family business rises to become one of Europe’s richest financial empires – until the family dramatically loses everything during the National Socialist era. Persecution and expropriation force them to flee, scattering the family across the globe.
Following its acclaimed, moving and award-winning world premiere at the Landestheater Linz, this musical now receives its German premiere at the Musikalische Komödie. Composer Thomas Zaufke draws on the musical languages of each era, drawing on a rich array of influences: Traditional Jewish music, patriotic hymns, Charleston, a march parody – framed by captivating modern soundscapes.
