Holidays at last: check into a beautiful hotel and unwind – ideally with a view of the water. But no: at the »Zum weißen Rössl« (»The White Horse Inn«) on the shores of the lake »Wolfgangsee«, things are going haywire. Farewell relaxation! The inn is completely packed, work and personal life become indistinguishable, and both staff and guests are wildly in love, which, due to mix-ups and secrets, keeps ending in chaos. After layoffs and tears, however, a few things can be clarified – both professionally and privately. The next holiday is bound to follow!
The 1930 cult operetta with music by Ralph Benatzky continues to inspire audiences today with songs such as »Im weißen Rössl am Wolfgangsee« and »Es muss was Wunderbares sein« (To be loved by you!). In addition to songs by Benatzky, dramaturge Hans Müller and director Erik Charell added jazzy trend dance numbers and additional songs, including Robert Stolz's »Was kann der Sigismund dafür, dass er so schön ist?«. Fortunately, the charm and wit of the piece could not be tarnished by the ban under National Socialism: in particular, the 1960 film adaptation with Waltraut Haas and Peter Alexander breathed new life into the »Horse«.
