In theatre, a Black Box typically refers to a simple performance space, usually square in shape with black walls. It is precisely this simplicity that creates a multitude of possibilities for configuring the interaction between stage and audience – an open framework for artistic experimentation.
For the second edition of the »Black Box« series, conceived by Ballet Director Rémy Fichet, the black stage space once again becomes the focal point for various choreographic languages. At Schauspielhaus Leipzig, a special place for new movement languages is created: Established choreographers from within the company develop works that turn their attention this time to Rainer Maria Rilke’s »Duino Elegies«.
The Elegies revolve around existential questions: The longing for the transcendent, the confrontation with transience, the necessity of transformation. »Elegien« is a choreographic exploration of Rilke’s condensed language. Entirely in black, in close proximity to the audience, between classical technique and contemporary expression.
