MARIO SCHRÖDER

Biography

Born in Finsterwalde, Mario Schröder received his dance training at the Palucca University of Dance in Dresden. He danced as first soloist at Leipzig Ballet – under the direction of Uwe Scholz since 1991. Furthermore he studied choreography at the Berlin Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art.

In 1999, he was appointed ballet director and chief choreographer at the Mainfranken Theatre Würzburg before working in the same position at the Theatre Kiel from 2001. Since the 2010/11 season, he is ballet director and chief choreographer of the Leipziger Ballett.
Mario Schröder is a board member of the Federal German Ballet and Dance Theatre Directors Conference (BBTK) and has been invited to judge for several international competitions for ballet and choreography. He has created more than 100 choreographies and worked as a dancer and choreographer e. g.in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China, the USA, Russia, Mongolia, Brasil, Colombia, France and other European countries. As a choreographer, he has worked with Ruth Berghaus, Maxim Dessau, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Dietmar Seyffert, Thilo Reinhardt and Uwe Scholz. His works have won numerous prizes both nationally and internationally.

Choreographies for Leipzig Ballet (selection): »Chaplin«, »Carmina Burana / A Dharma at Big Sur«, »Jim Morrison«, »Ein Liebestraum« based on music by Richard Wagner, the two-part ballet evening »Pax 2013«, »Mozart Requiem«, piano concert no. 2 in the ballet evening »Rachmaninov«, »Lobgesang« (Hymn of Praise) and »Van Gogh«, »Johannes-Passion« (The Passion of St. John), »Le Sacre du Printemps« and »Schwanensee«(SwanLake). »Magnificat« (Bach, Pergolesi and classical indian music), »Rituale« (rituals), »Cocoon« as a part of the ballet evening »Soto / Scholz / Schröder« and various choreographies in the series »Tanz in den Häusern der Stadt« – dance events in different locations of the city. New in the 2022/23 season were the world premiere of »Uneven« in the ballet evening »Marin/Schröder« and »Fusion«, a successful experiment together with the British sound and A.I. artist Harry Yeff.
