Biography
Fran Díaz is a Spanish choreographer based in Berlin. He trained at the National Ballet School of Canada in Toronto before joining Leipziger Ballett and Staatsballett Hannover as a dancer. His choreographic work often takes shape through interdisciplinary projects, exploring themes of community, belonging and the transformation of physical spaces and boundaries. His artistic practice also engages with queer culture and the structures of cultural institutions.
In 2020, his choreography »Toothpicks« received third prize at the International Choreography Competition in Hanover. The following year, he was a finalist at the International Choreography Competition in Copenhagen.
In 2023, three of his works premiered: »The Habit« for Bayerisches Staatsballett, as well as »Born by the Sea« and »Scheme« with his own project-based company. While »Scheme« examines the challenges of structural change through the example of complaints procedures within dance institutions, »Born by the Sea« was selected by the renowned European platform Aerowaves for its 2024 programme. The work has since toured extensively throughout Europe.
Fran Díaz was also among a small number of European choreographers invited to the New York Choreographic Institute. He subsequently premiered »The Mass Ornament«, a new commissioned work for Hessisches Staatsballett.
In the 2025/26 season, Fran Díaz creates »Eurydike« for Leipziger Ballett at Oper Leipzig.
