Our exhibition presents Albert Lortzing and the history of Leipzig and its opera against the backdrop of the 1848 revolution.
On 3 March 1848, Robert Blum, a stalwart of the democratic movement and theatre secretary, gave a famous speech from the balcony of Leipzig City Hall, demanding the resignation of the Saxon government and representation of the people in the Bundestag in Frankfurt. Blum and Albert Lortzing were companions, both engaged at the »Altes Theater and driven by common goals for democracy and art. Lortzing was not a barricade fighter, but he contributed in his own way: with the opera »Regina«, which will premiere at the »Lortzing Festival« in the opera house.
The exhibition will open on 3 March in the Gaderobenfoyer of the opera house and will be open during performances and during the »Lortzing Festival« until the third of May.
