Biography
Michael Borth is a critically acclaimed German baritone whose expressive stage presence and richly coloured voice make him one of the most sought-after singers of his generation. Engagements have taken him to renowned venues such as the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Opéra national du Rhin, the Komische Oper Berlin, the Theater Basel and the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. Recent career highlights include his debut at the Bregenz Festival as Kilian in »Der Freischütz«, as well as appearances as Donner in Wagner’s »Der Ring des Nibelungen« at the Theater Basel, conducted by Jonathan Nott. During the 2025/26 season, he appeared, amongst other roles, in the world premiere of Jan Müller-Wieland’s »Der Reisende« with the Dresden Philharmonic and made his debut as Clov in György Kurtág’s »Fin de Partie« at the Theater Basel. From 2018 to 2023, Michael Borth was a member of the ensemble at the Freiburg Theatre, where he sang leading roles in his repertoire, including Eugene Onegin, Don Giovanni and Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro). His performances as Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress), Mackie Messer (The Threepenny Opera) and Platon Kovalyov in Shostakovich’s »The Nose« at the Theatre Basel also attracted considerable attention. Michael Borth studied in Weimar and Berlin and was a member of the Plácido Domingo Centre for Advanced Training in Valencia.
During the 2026/27 season, Michael Borth will make his debut as Beckmesser in Wagner’s »Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg« in Minden. He will also appear in a new production of Hans Sommer’s »Lorelei« at the Staatstheater Braunschweig and make his role debut as Count Danilo in Lehár’s »The Merry Widow« at the Musikalische Komödie Leipzig.
