For his second premiere this season, Mario Schröder has chosen a piece whose genesis is shrouded in mystery: Mozart’s Requiem. Left incomplete, Mozart’s final work (sublimely bleak, threatening and ominous all at once) is surround by unanswered questions. The music of the Requiem is prodigiously intense. The extraordinary circumstances surrounding the work – from the unknown commissioner to Mozart’s death during the composition of this Mass for the Dead – have made this piece the stuff of myths and legends. This mystery is tailor-made for a powerful and intense ballet evening, featuring the Oper Leipzig Chorus and the Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Excerpts from Peri Paolo Pasolini’s 1958 picturesque poetry collection L’Usignolo della Chiesa Cattolica (The nightingale of the Catholic Church) are interlaced with Mozart’s music. In addition, the decision to set Mozart’s unfinished Requiem in d minor, KV 626, in Leipzig presents an interesting addition to Uwe Scholz’s 1998 ballet Die grosse Messe (The Great Mass), Mozart’s incomplete Mass in c minor, KV 427.
