Oper Leipzig Summer Cinema

Summer Cinema on Mondays and Thursdays!

Movies theatres have been open since the beginning of July; therefore, the Oper Leipzig is launching its summer cinema. Even during summer break, you don't have to do without your Opera favorites. A total of 16 videos with the ensemble members of Oper, Leipziger Ballett and Musikalische Komödie have been created over the past few months, which we're excited to present to you on our homepage Mondays and Thursdays. Look forward to some of the most beautiful arias of opera literature with the soloists of the Oper Leipzig, excerpts from our Tchaikovsky ballets with the Leipziger Ballett and a firework of entertainment with the ensemble of the Musikalische Komödie, all recorded exclusively for the summer cinema on the large stage of the opera house. You'll also get an interesting look behind the scenes of the mask, costume and technology departments. Our youngest viewers can also look forward to an exciting episode.

Leipziger Ballett | Lieder von einer Insel

Available July 20th, 2020!

The combination of cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach and Udo Zimmermann's »Lieder einer Insel« form the musical structure for Mario Schröder's »Blühende Landschaft«. You can see the Leipzig Ballet in an adaptation of »Lieder einer Insel« for digital space in the summer cinema.

Moments of isolation and community are the basis that ballet director and chief choreographer Mario Schröder chose in his creation for Henryk Górecki's "Sinfonie der Klagelieder". Lou Thabart is initially isolated, before the Leipziger Ballett ensemble gradually forms the community around him.

Leipziger Ballett | Perspectives

The dancers of the Leipziger Ballett are not only trained in classical dance, but also in modern movement languages ​​and improvisation techniques. A variety of improvisations were created for the summer cinema to make it possible to experience a lonely stage from all perspectives.

GAL JAMES – Soprano

Opera director, Franziska Severin, and chief dramaturge, Dr. Christian Geltinger, welcome you to the summer cinema of the Oper Leipzig! Soprano Gal James is starting things off with the romance of Elisabetta from Giuseppe Verdi's "Don Carlo" and the aria of Cio-Cio-San from Puccini's "Madama Butterfly": "Un bel di vedremo".

Magdalena Hinterdobler – Soprano

Soprano Magdalena Hinterdobler makes you dream with melodies by Wagner, Weber and Dvořák. You will also learn how a lake is conjured up on stage in »Rusalka« from Technical Director Oliver Gerds.

Musikalische Komödie #4

Once again, the Musikalische Komödie spreads a little wanderlust with composers like Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Weill, Pedro Elías Gutíerrez or Reveriano Soutullo.

How does a Celesta actually sound? Baritone Franz Xaver Schlecht and pianist Marianne Salmona show you with Papageno's aria "Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen"! In addition, two of the most beautiful and demanding baritone arias can be heard: "O du mein holder Abendstern" from Wagner's "Tannhäuser" and "Di Provenza il mar" from Verdi's "La traviata".

Bass and ensemble member Sebastian Pilgrim greets you in the last part of our summer cinema with an excerpt from Richard Strauss's opera “ Die schweigsame Frau ”and “Karfreitagszauber” from Richard Wagner’s "Parsifal ”. Head makeup artist Miriam Mendler-Benkendorf also shows how the elaborate wigs for theproduction "The Bartered Bride" were created.
