After the rejection of Die Feen, his first opera, a young Richard Wagner decided to try his hand in a genre completely uncharacteristic to him: an opera in the Italian opera buffa style. Nevertheless, his Carnival opera still features themes that would come to define his life: the incompatibility of eroticism with “true” love.
