Lyric Fairytale in three acts | Text by Jaroslav Kvapil

Description

Lyric Fairytale in three acts | Text by Jaroslav Kvapil | In Czech with German supertitles | Playing time ca. 3 1/4 hours | One intermission

Rusalka is a fairytale for adults that tells the story of longing for another world. Dvorák and Kvapil (his librettist) were inspired not only by Slavic myths, but also by de la Motte Fouqués’ Undine, and Andersen’s Little Mermaid. They tell their story from the perspective of a creature of nature, into whose world Man callously intrudes. It is one of the most well-known Czech operas, and although the “Song to the Moon” is its most famous excerpt, Dvorák’s entire score is filled with magical soundscapes and fragile beauty.
