The expressive capabilities of dance are the perfect medium to interpret Shakespeare’s themes of love, hate, forgiveness, revenge, and friendship. Sergei Prokofiev’s music clearly expresses the psychological aspects of the various figures and the relationships between them, be they the impatient hearts of the young pair, the bitter feud between Verona’s Capulets and Montagues, or Romeo’s blind rage and grief at the death of his friend Mercutio. Nothing can stop the power of destiny, leaving the young lovers no option but to be together in death. Their heart-wrenching fate makes »Romeo and Juliet« one of the most tragic, but also most beautiful, ballet stories, in which love is immortalized through death.
