Thomas J. Mayer


First studied history, German, philosophy, and music pedagogy, before undertaking voice lessons with Otto Hieronimi, Lieselotte Hammes, and Kammersänger Kurt Moll at the Staatliche Musikhochschule in Cologne. He has his first engagements at the theaters in Regensburg, Rostock, and Darmstadt. He was a member of the ensemble at the Theater Basel from 2004 to 2006, at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe in 2006/07 season, after debuting there in October 2005 as Wotan in »Die Walküre«. Shortly thereafter, debuts at the Bayerische Staats­oper and the La Scala in Milan followed. He was a member of the ensemble of the Hamburgische Staatsoper from 2008 to 2010, where he thrilled audiences as Wotan. He maintains a busy schedule as a concert singer and recitalist at home and abroad. Guest engagements have led him to the Aalto-Theater Essen (four villians in »Hoffmanns Erzählungen«), the Opernhaus Köln (Don Giovanni), the Vlaamse Opera Antwerpen (Barak in »Die Frau ohnen Schatten«), the Théâtre de la Monnaie Brüssel (Amfortas in »Parsifal«), in Tokyo (Mandryka in »Arabella«), at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (»Macbeth«), the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin (Tierbändiger/Athlet in »Lulu«), the Opéra National de Paris (Wotan in »Die Walküre«), the Teatro alla Scala in Milan (Wozzeck, and Posa in »Don Carlo«), at the Wiener Staatsoper and the Salzburger (Geisterbote in »Die Frau ohne Schatten« unter Christian Thielemann). He recently bowed as Wotan/Wanderer in the new »Ring des Nibelungen« at the Bayerische Staatsoper and as Telramund (»Lohengrin«) at the Bayreuther Festspiele in 2012. He has previously appeared at Oper Leipzig as Wotan in the concert performance of »Das Rheingold«, as the title role in»Der fliegende Holländer«, as Mandryka in »Arabella«, Barak in »Die Frau ohne Schatten«, and starting in 2017 as Wotan in »Die Walküre«. He returns to the Oper Leipzig with this role in the 2021/22 season.
