David Pountney

Biografie

Was born in Oxford. He made his international breakthrough as a stage director in 1972 with »Katja Kabanova« at the Wexford Festival. He was director of productions at the Scottish Opera from 1975-1980, a post he also held with the English National Opera from 1982-1993. He was artistic director from 2004 – 2014 at the Bregenze Festspiele, where he staged »Der fliegende Holländer«, »Nabucco«, »Fidelio«, »Greek Passion/Die Griechische Passion«, »Die Passagierin«, »Der goldene Hahn«, and »Die Zauberflöte«. He was name artistic director at Welsh National Opera in 2011. He has been invited to stage productions at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Wiener Staatsoper, die Salzburger Festspiele, the Bolshoi Theater, the Opéra des Paris, the Opernhaus Zürich, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and die Bayerische Staatsoper München. His 2007 production of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s »Die Soldaten« appeared at the Ruhrtriennale. He has directed the world premieres of works such as Philipp Glass’ »Satyagraha« (Rotterdam) and »The Voyage« (Metropolitan Opera New York), as well as works by Maxwell Davies, Holloway, Harvey, Blake, and Osborne. He has worked as librettist for operas by Peter Maxwell Davies. He is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions including the title »Commander of the British Empire« and the »Chevalier des Arts et Lettres«. He comes to the Oper Leipzig to stage the production of »Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg«.
