Calixto Bieito


Was born in Mirando de Ebro (Burgos, Spain). He led the Teatro Romea in Barcelona from 1999–2009, from 2010–12 helmed the Festival Internacional de las Artesde Castilla y León and the Barcelona Internacional Teatre (bit), an international platform for project by artists and theaters. He first worked in music theater at am Teatro Tivoli in Barcelona (Bretón’s zarzuela »La verbena de la Paloma«, 1996) and at the Teatre Lliure (Schoenberg’s »Pierrot Lunaire«, 1998). He was subsequently invited to the Salzburger Festspiele, the Staatsoper Hannover, the English National Opera in London, and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. His production of Mozart’s »Die Entführung aus dem Serail« at the Komische Oper in Berlin in 2004 put him on the map of European opera directors. He is a regular guest at the Komische Oper Berlin, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Staatsoper Stuttgart, the Opernhaus Zürich, the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the Teatro Real Madrid and die Opéra National de Paris. He appeared at the Oper Leipzig in the 2017/18 season with »Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg«.
