Officer Johann Jacob Casanova de Seingalt is the ultimate ladies’ man. And on the Islands of Murano, he’s the cause of plenty of bewilderment for the fairer sex. Casanova premiered in Leipzig in 1841, and showed Lortzing as a true theater person. Although it was billed as a comedy, the show struck a socially critical chord (one of the reasons it quickly disappeared from the repertoire). Despite its lack of renown, like Zar und Zimmermann before it and Der Wildschütz after it, Casanova counts as one of Lortzing’s masterpieces.
