The title alone seems to be a macabre contradiction in terms! But this widow really is as described: Filthy rich and hopelessly hedonistic, she enjoys her status as a widow in the salons of Paris, thinking of everything except marriage. After all, she doesn’t want to be wed for her money. Her countrymen, though, would rather see her inheritance of millions in Pontevedrinian hands, and nominate a worthy, marriageable candidate. But Count Danilo and Hanna Glawari are no strangers to one another…

Lehár’s The Merry Widow is a piece about the timeless battle of the sexes, about missed chances, hurt feelings, and the old adage that you always meet twice in life. At the same time, the piece shows how the genre of operetta can peer deep into the hearts of men and, despite bizarre absurdities and drunk-on-champagne Can Can dance extravaganzas, how it can speak to the truths of life, until, at the end, »Lippen schweigen, ‘s flüstern Geigen.«
