With two hundred years of perspective, the texts from Mozart’s singspiel Die Entführung aus dem Serail seem somewhat harmless. Even in Mozart’s time, the image of the bloodthirsty “Musulman” was a cliché that was often presented on the operatic stage after embedding itself in the collective mind following the first Turkish assault on Vienna.

Although Dietrich W. Hilsdorf’s production is firmly set in the past, it depicts man’s brutality as a phenomenon that is not rooted in a geographical heritage, but rather as a manifestation of the phenomenon of what it means to be human. At the same time, it shows us the benevolence of a specifically human love, one that is able to overcome such cruelty. As such, Mozart’s first German singspiel is as relevant now as it has ever been.
